The D304 set is one of the most aesthetically pleasing baking issues. This set is popular because of the block shaped cards with poses unique to the D304 set. Unlike many tobacco, caramel and other baking cards, the D304 poses were not used for any other set. This makes the set extra challenging for the collector seeking to acquire these poses. There are 25 cards in the D304 base set. There are also five variations where the player's team name has been blacked out as a result of the player being traded (Chance, Chase, Crandall, Evers and Herzog). This makes a total of 30 different fronts for the D304 master set.
The D304 issue has five backings:
Brunners Bread, General Baking, ButterKrust, Weber Bakery, and Martens Bakery. It is clear the Brunners Bread backing is far and away the easiest to locate. The most scarce backing is not so easy to discern. The two most scarce backings appear to be Martens and Weber. These two backings appear to be comparable in terms of scarcity. ButterKrust appears to be the third most scarce backing, followed by General Baking and then Brunners. It again should be noted that General Baking is significantly more difficult to locate than Brunners. It is clear the buyer will have to pay a premium to acquire a General Baking, ButterKrust, Weber or Martens backing.
The Fred Tenny card appears especially difficult to locate. It is unclear at this time why the Tenny is so scarce. However, dsue to this extreme scarcity the Tenny can fetch $400 or more even in PR condition.
The price guide below is for Brunners Bread. The cards of the five "blacked out" fronts are also included for completeness, even though it is reasonably certain these five cards cannot be found with a Brunners backing. The General Baking and ButterKrust backings carry a premium over the listed prices. Martens and Weber backings can carry a significant premium over the listed prices.
